By the time my cousin Abby had her baby shower, she knew she was going to have a baby boy so the colors and theme of the party was decidedly boyish. I chose turquoise and white for the cake and made an elegant design to match her personality but still say “baby boy”. Abby was stunningly beautiful and glowing the entire time. It was so good to see both Abby and her husband Ian who were visiting from Alaska

The cake has a simple design but was far from simple to create. I made an Italian Meringue Buttercream and covered it as smoothly as possible. The design on the bottom tier was created with a stencil and the diamonds on the top tier were created by gently pressing a hot knife into the buttercream.

Creating the diamonds was the most time-consuming part of the cake as I had to pass the knife into each line three to four times in order to get the clean edges and depth that I wanted. The bow, baby shoes, and teddy bear were all made from marshmallow fondant.

In order to get the baby shoes to dry quickly and hold their shape, I added tylose powder to the fondant. Tylose powder is a hardening agent, which will strengthen and harden fondant so it can be used in modeling. I could have just as easily used gum paste, however, I did not have any on hand and did not feel like running to the store so these are the moments I am happy that I keep a bit of tylose in stock.

Wow… what a beautiful cake. Of all the baby shower cakes for boys, I don’t think Abby could have had a better design than this one. Dahn, this is such a pretty cake, and as you say: It has a certain simplicity about it – in spite of the fact that it was not simple to make – but that simplicity really adds so much charm and beauty to it. Thank you for making this baby shower cake for Abby’s baby shower, because you didn’t just make a cake, but you also helped to make Abby extremely happy at her baby shower. I don’t think there are too many cake decorators who take the exceptional strive for perfection, beauty, and design that you put into this cake. You have an amazing artistic talent. Thank you for doing such a great job for Abby! I know she loved it, and so do I.
