Cheeseburger Cake Design

I have made a few cheeseburger cakes in the past but I like how this one turned out more than any of the other ones I have made. I have never been a big fan of fondant but it sure does make a cool looking cake.

I made three 9-inch cakes and covered them in fondant then dabbed brown and yellow food coloring on the ‘buns’ to give them a toasted-bun look. I stabbed the brown “beef patty” with kitchen scissors to give it some texture then stacked it on top of the bottom bun. Since the cake was a light sponge cake I supported the layers with large bubble-tea straws so it would not collapse on itself. The cheese and tomatoes were simply a matter of rolling out red and orange fondant then cutting circles for the tomatoes and squares for the cheese.

Rolling out a piece of green fondant and ruffling the edges made the lettuce, which was quite quick.

The red onions took a little more time, I rolled out purple and white fondant then layered them on top of each other. I cut thin strips and pressed them together then formed a half circle.

The french fries were made by slicing a vanilla butter cake into strips and toasting them under the broiler.  To finish the look of the cake I placed the cake on checkered paper that I had picked up at a local burger joint.
