Meal Planning Tips

Start with the dishes that take the longest. Roasts, baked casseroles, or anything that needs to rest after cooking should be at the top of your prep list. Build everything else around them.

Make a timeline. Write out when each dish goes in the oven, gets chopped, or needs to be reheated. It sounds like overkill until you’re halfway through cooking and can’t remember if the potatoes were supposed to be on the stove already.

Work ahead where it counts. Chop veggies, prep pie crusts, and mix dressings a day or two before.

Use the slow cooker (or Instant Pot) for backup. They’re perfect for freeing up the oven and keeping dishes warm without babysitting. Bonus points for making mashed potatoes without hogging the stove.

Clean as you go, future you will be grateful. You don’t need a spotless kitchen mid-meal, but running the dishwasher or clearing the prep bowls makes the final cleanup way less painful.

Use store-bought pie crusts or rolls: Unless you love baking from scratch, no one’s going to judge you for outsourcing the crust or grabbing a good bakery roll. Focus your energy where it counts.

Grab pre-chopped produce when it makes sense. Pre-cut carrots, onions, or even a mirepoix mix can shave off prep time.

Make one impressive centerpiece dish and keep the rest simple. No need to go overboard on every item. A well-cooked ham or lamb roast paired with easy sides still feels complete.

Pick a make-ahead dessert: Desserts like cheesecake, ice box cakes, and pies, can be made a couple days in advance and even taste better after chilling. They free up oven space and your sanity on the day-of.

Set the table the day before. It’s one less thing to worry about when you’re in the middle of oven Tetris on Easter morning.
