I’ve made a lot of homemade pizza over the years, and one thing I’ve learned is that the right seasoning can make a difference. After some trial and error, I’ve landed on a simple, well-balanced mix.  Paired with a simple pizza dough recipe, these seasonings make any pizza exceptional.

This is a simple seasoning for pizza that will level up your pizza game, whether you’re enjoying takeout pizza or making your own pizza pie from scratch! Part of the game includes mastering how to layer a pizza – an art in itself.

This spice mix also works wonders on buttered Italian bread, and pasta sauces. And for a real treat, use it to make pizza sauce from fresh tomatoes.

Why This Pizza Seasoning Recipe Works

There’s no need to rely on store-bought spice blends when you can mix up a better-tasting version at home in just five minutes. Here’s why this homemade pizza seasoning is worth making:

  • Quick & Easy: Just measure, mix, and store. No special equipment needed.
  • Better than Store-Bought: No unnecessary fillers or preservatives, just real ingredients.
  • Customizable: Want a spicier kick? Add more red pepper flakes. Prefer a smoky depth? Increase the smoked paprika.
  • Multi-Purpose: Works on everything from pizza to pasta and roasted meats.

The Ingredients

This seasoning blend brings together classic Italian herbs, bold aromatics, and just the right balance of spice to enhance any pizza.

  • Herbs: Dried oregano & dried basil. Classic flavors that give pizza its signature taste.
  • Aromatics: Onion flakes & garlic powder
  • Spices: Smoked paprika for a hint of smokiness and Flaked sea salt.
  • Optional Add-Ins:  Red pepper flakes (heat), Hot honey granules (sweet-heat), Crushed fennel seeds (subtle licorice note).

How to Make a Homemade Pizza Seasoning Recipe

This recipe is as simple as it gets!Step 1: Combine all ingredients in a small bowl.
Step 2: Transfer the mixture to an airtight spice jar or mason jar. Store in a cool, dry place for up to six months.

Recipe Variations

Mediterranean Blend: For a brighter, herbaceous flavor, add: 1 teaspoon of each of these: dried thyme, dried rosemary, dried marjoram.

Spicy Fiesta Mix: If you love heat, try this bold, smoky variation: 1 teaspoon chipotle powder, 1 teaspoon ground cumin, and ½ teaspoon black pepper.

Mixing a blend of seasoning in a bowl.

Recipe Tips

  • Taste and Adjust: Feel free to tweak the spice blend based on your preferences. If you love garlic, add more garlic powder. Want less salt? Reduce it or leave it out altogether.
  • Use Fresh, High-Quality Spices: Since dried herbs lose potency over time, make sure your spices are fresh for the best flavor.
  • Store Properly: Keep your seasoning in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry place to maintain maximum freshness.
  • Salt: I like using flaky salt because it distributes better, preventing pockets of saltiness. If using table salt, use slightly less since it’s denser than flaked salt.

Serving Suggestions

Think this zesty seasoning is just for pizza? Think again. Jazz up roasted chicken, give your spaghetti some pizzazz, or make your mushroom pizza sing. And those roasted baby potatoes? They’ll go from ‘meh’ to ‘more’ with just a sprinkle.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons dried oregano
  • 3 tablespoons dried basil
  • 2 tablespoons dried onion flakes
  • 1 ½ tablespoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 ½ teaspoons large-flake sea salt (such as Maldon), or ¾ teaspoons table salt

Optional:

  • 2 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoons hot honey granules
  • ½ teaspoon crushed fennel seeds

Instructions

  • Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl.
  • Transfer to an airtight container and store in a cool, dry area.

Notes

  • When stored properly in an airtight container, this seasoning will stay fresh for up to 6 months.
  • Dried herbs are best for a shelf-stable seasoning blend. Fresh herbs contain moisture, which can cause the mix to spoil quickly. If using fresh, add them directly to the pizza after baking.
