Homemade Texas Toast Garlic Bread is a quick way to turn thick-sliced bread into a substantial garlic bread side. The garlic-Parmesan butter spreads over the bread and gives it plenty of savory flavor, while the thick slices stay sturdy enough for dipping into soup, pasta sauce, or pan juices.

It is also flexible when dinner is already underway. Use the oven when you are making several slices, the air fryer for a small batch, or a skillet or outdoor grill when you want a quick, browned finish.

Texas Toast garlic bread is a natural match alongside stuffed pasta shells, Italian meatballs and Spaghetti and Minestrone Soup.

Skip the Frozen Box, This Texas Toast Is Easy

Thick bread holds up well: Texas toast-style bread gives you a sturdy slice with enough surface area for a generous layer of garlic butter.

The butter does more than add richness: Fresh garlic, Parmesan, parsley, and garlic powder give the spread a savory flavor that reaches the edges of each slice.

You can choose the method: The same prepared bread works in the oven, air fryer, skillet, or on an outdoor grill, so you can use the method that fits the rest of your meal.

It works with more than barbecue: The sturdy toast is useful with saucy pasta, soups, seafood, and skillet meals, making it an easy side to keep in your rotation.

Ingredient Notes

Thick-sliced bread: Texas toast bread is usually sliced about ¾-inch thick, but any thickly sliced white sandwich bread will work. You can also buy an unsliced loaf and cut it into thick slices at home. If you want to bake the bread yourself, make my homemade white bread.

Butter: Soften the butter to room temperature so it mixes evenly with the garlic, Parmesan, parsley, and seasonings and spreads easily over the bread.

Garlic: Fresh minced garlic gives the butter its main garlic flavor, while garlic powder helps distribute that flavor evenly across each slice.

Parmesan and parsley: Parmesan adds savory flavor to the butter, and fresh parsley gives it a little color and freshness.

Optional cheese: Add grated mozzarella or Colby cheese if you want a cheesy Texas Toast. It melts well over the warm garlic butter.

Choosing a Cooking Method

You can make this Texas toast in the oven, air fryer, skillet, or on an outdoor grill. The best method mostly depends on how many slices you’re making and what else is cooking.

This garlicky Texas toast is especially good with saucy dinners like baked ziti with sausage or a rich Bolognese sauce.

It’s also a great match for seafood, especially Mussels in Garlic Wine Sauce, where the thick slices are perfect for soaking up the garlicky wine broth.

Recipe Tips

Soften the butter: Room-temperature butter mixes evenly with the garlic, Parmesan, and seasonings, making it easier to spread over the bread.

Use thick-cut bread: Texas toast bread is typically about ¾ inch thick. If you cannot find it, use another thick-cut white sandwich bread.

Add cheese at the end: If you are using mozzarella or Colby cheese, add it after the bread has started to brown so it melts without overcooking the toast.

Leave space between slices: A little room around each piece helps the bread brown instead of steaming, especially in the oven or air fryer.

Freeze for later: The prepared garlic butter can be frozen in an airtight container for up to 3 months, so you can make the toast when you need it.

Ingredients

  • 8 tablespoons butter, 1 stick, softened
  • cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley
  • 2 to 4 garlic cloves, minced (1 ½ teaspoons)
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 6 slices thick white sandwich bread, or Texas toast bread
  • ½ cup grated mozzarella cheese, optional; or colby cheese

Instructions

  • Combine the butter, Parmesan, parsley, garlic, garlic powder, and salt in a small bowl and mash together until it is a smooth paste.
  • Slather the butter on both sides of the bread slices.

Oven Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F. Place the buttered bread slices on a baking sheet in a single layer.
  • Bake for 5 to 6 minutes, then flip the bread and bake for another 3 to 5 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp around the edges.
  • If desired, sprinkle with grated mozzarella or Colby cheese and return to the oven for 1 to 2 minutes, or until the cheese melts.

Air Fryer Texas Toast

  • Place the buttered bread slices in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Air fry at 360°F for 3 to 4 minutes, then flip and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • If desired, sprinkle with grated mozzarella or Colby cheese and air fry for another 1 minute, or until the cheese melts.

Grilled Texas Toast

  • Heat a skillet over medium high heat. Place the buttered bread in the hot skillet and cook for 2 to 3 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
  • Sprinkle with Mozzarella cheese, if desired and cover the skillet with a lid for 30 to 60 seconds until the cheese melts.
  • You can also place the bread slices directly on the grill grates of an outdoor grill and grill for 1 to 3 minutes on each side until golden brown.

Notes

Choose thick-cut bread: Texas toast bread is typically sliced about ¾ inch thick. If you can’t find it, use any thick-cut white sandwich bread or buy an unsliced loaf and cut your own thick slices.
Soften the butter: Let the butter soften to room temperature so it mixes easily with the garlic, Parmesan, and seasonings and spreads evenly over the bread.
Storage: Store leftover Texas toast in an airtight container or resealable bag at room temperature for 3 to 4 days. For longer storage, freeze it in an airtight container for up to 3 months.

Yum! just tried this recipe last night I prepped the butter spread the day before. I found it to be delicious! My daughter thought it could use a little less garlic and parsley . I let her know that when she invites me over she can experiment around with the amount of garlic she would like.
Your current recipe is the one that I’m saving in my recipe card index. Thank you for sharing!

I was curious how you can get 8 in nutrition, when you only use 6 slices of bread?
