Why Use Condensed Milk for Brownies
Sweetened condensed milk is one of those ingredients that can sometimes be overlooked in baking. It’s a staple in sweet treats like our Brown Sugar Fudge, Chocoflan Cake and our Lavender Ice Cream. But when it comes to a baked good, condensed milk has the potential to work wonders, elevating both the taste and texture.
That’s exactly the case with these brownies! Sweetened condensed milk gives the brownies a sweet, almost caramel-like flavor and imparts moisture into the batter that makes these super tender, too.
The end result? A rich, chocolatey, fudge-like brownie that melts in your mouth.

Ingredients for Condensed Milk Brownies
This is a great pantry recipe. Here’s a look at the ingredients you’ll need to make these sweetened condensed milk brownies.
- Butter. Use unsalted butter, melted, to give these brownies a rich, buttery flavor.
- Chocolate or chocolate chips. Chopped and melted, the chocolate goes right into the batter.
- Sweetened condensed milk. For moisture, flavor and sweetness that makes these brownies irresisitble! We like Eagle Brand.
- Granulated sugar. Just 1/2 cup of white sugar is all you need since the condensed milk adds its own sweet flavor.
- Vanilla extract. A splash of vanilla is a must in brownies!
- Large eggs. For the best results, make sure your eggs are at room temperature.
- All-purpose flour. A 1/2 cup of flour gives the brownies structure.
- Cocoa powder. More chocolate! In the form of cocoa powder, this also gives the brownies the perfect flavor and texture.
- Salt. A pinch of salt with chocolate is always a great idea.
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips. The chocolatey mix-in that takes brownies to the next level.
Keep all these ingredients in your pantry and you will never buy a box of brownies again.
Fudgy Brownies with Sweetened Condensed Milk
Condensed milk is the secret ingredient that lends a layer of richness to your brownies, making them incredibly fudgy and moist. Sweetened condensed milk is made by evaporating water from milk and adding sugar, resulting in a thick, sweet syrup. When it’s baked into brownies, it caramelizes and thickens, giving your treats that gooey, melt-in-your-mouth texture that’s characteristic of the perfect fudgy brownie. The sweetness of the condensed milk also adds depth to the chocolate brownies.

Recipe Variations
Brownies are versatile, and you can easily add ingredients or make slight changes to the recipe to create a new brownie flavor. Here are some ideas to get you started.
- Nutty Brownies: Add 1 cup of chopped walnuts or pecans to the batter before baking. For more nutty flavor, roast the nuts lightly before adding them.
- Caramel Swirl Brownies: Drop spoonfuls of caramel sauce onto the brownie batter and use a knife to swirl it in before baking.
- Mocha Brownies: Add 2 tablespoons of instant espresso powder to the batter.
- Coconut Brownies: Mix in 1 cup of shredded coconut to the brownie batter.
Tips for the Best Results
- If you use a square 9-inch baking pan, reduce the baking time to 18 to 20 minutes.
- For a larger batch in a 13 x 9-inch pan, double the recipe and bake the brownies for 33 to 36 minutes.
- The brownies are done when they are slightly puffed and cracked around the edges of the pan. You can also use an instant-read thermometer to test doneness. It should read between 180°F to 198°F. They will be a bit gooey at 180°F and well-done at 198°F.
- For a different flavor spin, add in chopped nuts, chopped dark chocolate or white chocolate chips.
- Store the brownies at room temperature in an airtight container for 5-7 days.
- While you only need a whisk for mixing the batter, feel free to use an electric mixer (like a hand mixer or stand mixer) if you prefer. Be careful not to over-mix, especially once you add in the dry ingredients.

Yes and no. The cans of condensed milk sold in the store are specifically designed to withstand the high pressure that builds up when heated. However, they can explode if the cans of condensed milk get dented or are not completely submerged in the water. If the water evaporates and exposes the can to air, or if the can is damaged in any way, it is not safe to boil cans of condensed milk.

Semi-sweet or dark chocolate work great. You can also use milk chocolate if you prefer. Thanks for the question.
