A big Spiral Ham is one of the easiest crowd pleasers to serve anytime of the year. It takes minimal effort to prepare as it is already cooked. All that is needed is to wrap it in a blanket of foil and reheat it in the oven. Another easy method is to put it in a turkey roasting bag to reheat, which is what we used.
The annual Christmas party for our Tuesday night small-group bible study was last week and Don and I hosted it at our house. I provided a spiral ham for the main entrée as well as some roasted, room temperature asparagus and the rest of the group brought the potatoes, biscuits, salads, and desserts.
How We Prepared Our Spiral Ham:
This spiral ham weighted just a tad over 10 pounds and although the directions said to roast it at 275°F for 12 minutes per pound, I have found that 6 minutes per pound heats it completely and results in a moister ham. I popped it into a large turkey roasting bag and put it in the oven at 275°F and roasted it for 50-minutes.
Next, I removed it from the oven, opened up the bag, pushing it down around the sides and put a ginger preserve glaze on the ham. Another quick ten-minutes at 350°F crisps up the glaze and….Voilà.! it is ready to serve.
I let it rest for 10 minutes before carving off the slices.
It carves up fairly easily just by cutting around the bone with a sharp knife and then removing the slices where the fat separates from the meat.
Everyone in our group is all about the same age which adds to the fun. We always have a good time together whether it is a weekly bible study or just a social event.
Recently, we met at a restaurant for dinner; then we went to the local symphony together to seeThe Messiah & Tchaikowsk. It was my first time to see this play other than parts of it on television and I enjoyed it very much.
The Reason for the Season:
This is such a special time of the year and the older I get the more meaningful and special it becomes. That could be because we are now “empty nesters.”
Our focus has now shifted to the real reason for Christmas and the great gift that God gave us by sending Jesus. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life”. John 3:16 (NKJV)
Merry Christmas everyone!
